Visovac – The island of spirituality and faith

Visovac is an island located on the lake Visovac, in the area of ​​the Krka National Park. Since 1445, there is a Franciscan monastery. Which with a beautiful landscape forms a unique ambient, natural, cultural, historical, and spiritual whole. The monastery museum is very interesting and includes numerous exhibits. The museum houses a significant archaeological collection, a collection of historical church vestments and utensils. Some objects date back to Roman times, more precisely from the 1st century. It is precisely this uniqueness, history, and beauty that makes it one of the most important natural and cultural values ​​of Croatia.

Fleeing the onslaught of the Turks in the 15th century, the Franciscans left Bosnia and settled in Visovac. They built the Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of Mercy and the Church of Our Lady of Visovac. Which together, along with the beautiful landscape of Lake Visovac, form a unique ambient whole. From the day they first settled it, Visovac and the Franciscans who live in it are inextricably linked with the life of the surrounding areas and over the years have shared with the local population all the suffering, but also the joys. Before the Franciscans, the hermits of St. Augustine were on the island.
