Velebit – A fairytale mountain

Velebit is a mythical Croatian mountain. It is synonymous with wildlife, karst, and harsh nature, and it also has huge natural importance. Although not the highest, Velebit with its 145 kilometers is the longest mountain in Croatia. In a gentle arch, like a huge rampart 10 to 30 kilometers wide, it towered from the continent over the sea. Only a few roads pass cut through the massif, and they also traditionally divide Velebit into several parts. A large part of Velebit is protected by the borders of the Northern Velebit and Paklenica National Park and the Velebit Nature Park. This dramatic mountain range, on the Adriatic coast in Croatia, is one of the wildest areas of the entire Mediterranean. A region to which wildlife returns.

Velebit is the largest Croatian mountain, and it’s rich with natural phenomena. Protected as a nature park and covering over 2000 km2, it is by far the largest protected area in Croatia. The park includes several smaller protected areas, including two national parks – Northern Velebit and Paklenica. Velebit Mountain contains many natural sights that are among the most valuable in Croatia. Therefore, the entire mountain was placed under the protection of UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve, currently, the only one in Croatia listed as such. Velebit is not only significant for the total number of different species and the richness of flora and fauna, but also the significant number of endemic species.

Northern Velebit National Park – Northern Velebit contains rich flora and fauna that enhance the beauty of the park. This part of Velebit is the best point from which you will see an extraordinary view of the Adriatic Sea and islands.

Paklenica National Park – This landscape paradise in all seasons, has its own unique and irresistible attraction. In addition to natural beauty, Paklenica attracts with its endless recreational activities, day after day.

Velebit Nature Park – Velebit Nature Park is the largest, most attractive, and most complex protected area in the Republic of Croatia. The park is one of the most beautiful and precious natural phenomena in Croatia.
